The Kicklighter Resource Center, Inc. will be hosting its 5th annual Revved up for Autism Car, Truck & Bike Show at the National Guard Armory off of Eisenhower, about 12 minutes away from our vacation villas (use the Truman Parkway). The show is taking place Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Enjoy music, food and a raffle for prizes including an O’Reilly gift certificate, Oreck Car Vacuums and much more!

This event is being held to help spread awareness for autism and to aid in raising funds for Kicklighter. The Kicklighter Academy is an early learning center working to improve the lives of children with autism and other developmental and physical disabilities.

Saturday May 4

After Party, 6:30 p.m. – 3 a.m. at the Tybee Social Club. After spending the day exploring Savannah, come to the Social Club for a big party on the deck, under the stars with the ocean breeze in your hair.

Brunch, 12 – 2 p.m. in three locations: Coco’s Sunset Grill; Fannie’s on the Beach & the Tybee Social Club (reservations required here)

Beach Sweep, 2:30 p.m. in front of Fannie’s on the Beach (1613 Strand Avenue). Join forces with the Tybee Beautification Association to clean up the beach on Tybee Island. Work off some of those calories you just ate at brunch!

Last year we had the pleasure of hosting a retreat for a group of very young ladies. They were, in fact, girl scouts. It was a pile of fun and we have some photos and quotes from both the scouts and their mothers.

Our Girl Scout troop visited Savannah for the 100th year celebration. Planning a trip for over 30 girls and moms is a difficult task. It is not easy to please everyone. One decision which was effortless was booking this property.

Wow! How wonderful – we had a great time hosting this group. You see, between our three vacation rental properties, we can host up to 44 guests. However, our largest rental house is 109 West, where the girl scouts were staying.

The main level sits above street level, and features a fully equipped, spacious kitchen with bar seating and a table and chairs, great for making pancake breakfasts and other fun group meals. Along with a large banquet room with seating for ten, and a comfortable lounge, there is plenty of space for everyone. The upper two levels each feature three bedrooms and three baths, and the fourth level is a lovely, intimate penthouse.

Are you a film buff? If so, you are probably familiar with the Telluride film festival called “Mountainfilm.” For the last four years, Savannah has held a mini-version of this festival featuring the top films premiered in Colorado.

Mountainfilm will tour through Savannah the weekend of January 18 – 19, 2013 at the Trustee’s Theatre. This venue is within walking distance (.5 mile) from our historic district vacation rentals. Screenings are at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, as well as a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

The tour will present the very best films of this year’s Telluride Mountainfilm Festival. The subject matter of these films is a celebration of “the indomitable spirit” via themes of adventure, perseverance, and remarkable personalities. The film festival’s mission is to “educate and inspire audiences about issues that matter, cultures worth exploring, environments worth preserving, and conversations worth sustaining.”

Films at the 2013 MountainFlim on Tour

Bidder 70: What makes this film interesting is that the protagonist — activist Tim DeChristopher, who’s been to Mountainfilm several times — could not attend the screening in person because he’s serving two years in prison for an act of civil disobedience in which he disrupted an oil and gas land auction.

Eco-Ninja: From the maker of the award-winning short film The Job (Mountainfilm 2007) comes this satirical brief comedy about a corporation that enforces a go-green policy in its offices by hiring an Eco Ninja who takes his duties all too seriously. As usual, Jonathan Browning and Screaming Frog Productions think outside the box — and then recycle the box.

The Freedom Chair: Josh Dueck was a passionate free-skier who coached world-class athletes. But one day, he misjudged his speed as he approached a jump and crashed. His spinal cord was severed, leaving him paralyzed. Instead of giving up on skiing, however, Dueck refocused his passion into sit-skiing, and the experience allowed him to jump-start a new career and find a new way to do what he loves the best: ski.

The Man Who Lived on his Bike: What can you do on a bicycle? For Guillaume Blanchet, the question is what can’t you do? In this two-minute homage to bikes and the bike obsessed, Blanchet eats, sleeps, showers, shaves, works, cooks and even dates — all from atop his man-powered machine.
