Savannah Scenic Cruises

May 18th, 2012 by Robbie Bell

Dolphin Crest

Look for dolphins during Savannah scenic cruises.

Savannah sits on the Savannah River, not far off the Atlantic Ocean. As the largest port in the state of Georgia, it is intricately linked to the water. That’s why many guests of our Savannah Vacation Rentals find scenic cruises to be a good way to explore the area.

Scenic cruises won’t get you close to any of the 22 historic squares for which Savannah is renowned. They will, however, provide stellar views of the waterfront and historic waterways. Seen from afar, the beauty of Savannah shines. Historic architecture. Graceful, moss-draped trees. Lovely.

The following businesses offer scenic cruises in the Savannah area:

  • Dolphin Magic Tours. Board the vessel at River Street and cruise out towards Tybee Island. Fort Jackson, Fort Pulaski, Cockspur Island, lighthouses…. you’ll see it all. This ship is in search of dolphins, and dolphin sightings are guaranteed.
  • Savannah Riverboat Cruises. A variety of cruises are available, from Harbor Sightseeing Cruises to Weekend Moonlight Cruises. You can learn about the Civil War or you can dine and dance.

Getting out on the water is always fun, no matter where you are. Seeing Savannah from the Savannah River, circling Tybee Island, or heading to big water in search of dolphins can make your Savannah vacation that much more unforgettable. Give it a try the next time you stay at one of our Savannah Vacation Homes.

Tall Ships Sail to Savannah

March 20th, 2012 by Robbie Bell

Bounty tall ship, Savannah.

See the Bounty in Savannah this May.

On Thursday, May 3, 2012, historic Tall Ships will sail into Savannah’s Riverfront. It will be a memorable experience for everyone fortunate enough to be there.

The Tall Ships will be open for viewing and touring Friday May 4 through Sunday, May 6. Many fun activities are planned, including the singing of Sea Shanties, Stilt Walkers, Story Telling, and Pirate Raids. A high point of the whole weekend (for those of us stuck on land) will come Monday, May 7, when the ships leave port in a fabulous Parade of Sail.

Several of the Tall Ships will motor up the Savannah River during their stay, taking some lucky passengers with them. These sailings are scheduled to take place several times a day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It is sure to be a thrilling experience.

As of now, 14 Tall Ships are scheduled to be in Savannah in early May. They were built in France, Nova Scotia, England, and the United States. Some were built to fight, some were built to be in the movies. All are beautiful to behold, especially when under sail.

Guests of our Savannah Vacation Homes will see the Tall Ships sail into Savannah. As of this writing, there is still availability for May 6 and 7, 2012. Take the opportunity, and come watch the Tall Ship Parade of Sail.

More information about the Tall Ships is available at Savannah Tall Ships. More information about our Savannah Vacation Rentals is available at Savannah Villas.

Visit SCAD

March 14th, 2012 by Robbie Bell

SCAD Trustees Theater 2

The SCAD Theater, in Savannah.

Each spring, thousands of high school juniors and their parents visit colleges and universities. They trek across their home states and voyage into neighboring states. Some will board planes and visit universities on opposite coasts. It is an exciting time.

Both the parents and their teenage children are doing research. Parents want to know if the schools are academically challenging and safe. Teens want to know lots of things. Does the school offer programs in what they want to study? What are the students like? And so on, and so on.

The Savannah College of Art and Design is not meant for every student. For some, however, it would be hard to find a better match. SCAD has outstanding programs in design, fashion, and digital media. Students can study architectural history or furniture design at the School of Building Arts. They can study writing, cinema, liberal arts and teaching at the School of Liberal Arts. And so much more.

While online research is valuable, there is nothing quite like a campus visit to get a feel for a place. SCAD offers tours to prospective students daily, except Sundays. Admissions counseling is available Monday through Friday. We suggest lodging at one of our Savannah Vacation Homes.

Midweek Gems During Savannah Music Festival

March 6th, 2012 by Robbie Bell

The Savannah Music Festival has captured the hearts of music fans for years. We look forward to it the rest of the year, both locals and visitors lucky enough to have been here during past Savannah Music Festivals. Locals are inundated with out-of-town guests: old college friends and distant relations. Visitors vie for Savannah lodging. Music fans fill our Savannah Vacation Rentals.

Savannah Music Festival

See Sanctified Steel and Southern Soul at the Savannah Music Festival.

Weekend shows fill quickly, as does weekend lodging. As of this writing, the Carriage House of our Broughton Street Guest House is still available during the SMF opening weekend, but our other Savannah Vacation Rental Houses are full. It’s enough to drive a music fan to tears.

But chin up. It’s easier to find lodging during the week, just as it’s easier to get tickets to shows.  Several of our Savannah Vacation Rentals have availability during the week throughout the Savannah Music Festival. That’s good news, since some great SMF shows are scheduled for Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. For example:

  • Sanctified Steel & Southern Soul: Ruthie Foster and the Campbell Brothers play several times during opening weekend. Consider seeing them not Saturday night but Sunday March 15, afternoon or evening. They’ll be just as good.
  • Savannah Music Festival’s original Piano Showdown plays Monday, March 26, at  5:30 and 8:00 p.m.
  • Jazz Master Cedar Walton performs at 12:30 on the 26th, and the Savannah Winds Symphony takes the stage at 7:00 p.m.
  • On Tuesday the 27th, piano fans can see Sebastian Knauer at 11:00 a.m. and Kenny Barron at 12:30 p.m. That evening, there’s a celebration of Louis Armstrong by Wycliffe Gordon and Friends.

A complete performance schedule is available at Savannah Music Festival.

Festive Progressive Dinners in Savannah

November 20th, 2011 by Robbie Bell

Many folks who stay in our Savannah Vacation Houses are thrilled to have fully equipped kitchens at their disposal. They cook together during family reunions, and they cook together during corporate retreats. They cook together so they don’t always have to dine out.

The dining room at 109 West.

Other guests of our Savannah Vacation Homes are happy to have coffee makers and toasters, but prefer exploring Savannah’s many restaurants to cooking.

A fun way to dine out in Savannah is to embark on a Progressive Dinner through the Historic District. Sample a variety of restaurants in one night. It’s a great way to add a festive flair to dining out during the holiday season.

Start with drinks at the Bacchus Wine Lounge. Bacchus serves 45 different wines by the glass, and a variety of specialty cocktails as well. Or try a Savannah beer at Savannah’s only brew pub, the Moon River Brewing Company.

Move on to appetizers. Jazz’d Tapas Bar serves great music as well as a tasty assortment of small plates. The Old Pink House serves large platters heaped with such Southern treats as Fried Green Tomatoes, Blackened Oysters, and Mac and Cheese Poppers.

There are many restaurants in which to enjoy a main course in Historic Savannah. Belford’s Savannah Seafood & Steak serves perfectly prepared steaks and assorted seafoods in a sophisticated atmosphere. Vic’s on the River dishes up local seafood.

Walking from one restaurant to the next will stimulate the appetite and ensure there is room for dessert at Lulu’s Chocolate Bar. Once there, dive into Crème Brûlée, topple Mousse Towers, or indulge in Chocolate Fondue for 2.

Try a Progressive Dinner this holiday season when staying at one of our Savannah Vacation Houses. Bon Appétit!

Savannah Bridge Run

November 11th, 2011 by Robbie Bell

Runners, walkers, and crawlers are invited to Savannah each winter to participate in the annual Savannah Bridge Run. Called the toughest bridge run in the south, the Savannah Bridge Run takes place above the Savannah River on the Talmadge Bridge. it is a beautiful route, no matter how you get across it.

Driving to Savannah

Run the Talmadge Bridge, which spans the Savannah River.

The Savannah Bridge Run takes place Saturday, December 3, 2011. We still have an opening at one of our Savannah Vacation Homes. The Broughton Street Carriage House has one queen bedroom and one comfortable queen-sized sleeper sofa. It can fit up to four bridge runners, walkers, or crawlers.

The Savannah Bridge Run can be either a 5K run, a 10K run, or a Double Pump (the 5K and 10K combined). The difference is all in how many times you cross the bridge. There is also a 1/4 mile Kids Run.

Don’t let the lack of lodging prevent you from this fun run. Stay at the Broughton Street Carriage House, a luxury Savannah Vacation Home.

Additional information about the race is available at Savannah Bridge Run.

Spend the Holidays in Savannah

November 7th, 2011 by Robbie Bell

Christmas tree lights II

Spending Christmas in Savannah? Stay at our Savannah Vacation Homes.

There is a reason so many funny movies have been made about the holidays. Combine travel with feasts and family reunions, and there are bound to be some comedic moments. At the same time, it is wonderful to reconnect with loved ones. We suffer through exhausting travel and awkward lodging situations in order to share the holidays with the people we love most in the world. In the end, it’s worth it.

Yet we should still strive to make holiday trips as good as possible. One way to remove stress from the equation is to avoid lodging with friends and family. Why not stay someplace comfortable that is close to them?

Our Savannah Vacation Homes are ideal. Each has a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, and parlor, which allows our guests to entertain friends and family in their own space. The people you’re visiting will be happy to share the burden – and fun – of hosting with you.

Cook in the kitchen or ask us to recommend caterers who will cook for your. Invite folks to your Savannah Vacation Home for drinks and appetizers before dinner or dessert after dinner. Host a breakfast. And after spending the day at someone else’s house, come back and relax in your own home away from home. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?

Our Savannah Vacation Homes are full for Thanksgiving 2011. The grand house at 109 West is still available for Christmas and may be rented as one property or as three: the main house, the Garden Level, and the Carriage House. Please visit our Savannah Villas Reservations page.
