Savannah’s Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum

May 15th, 2011 by Robbie Bell

Since Savannah Georgia is steeped in history, it’s a wonderful place to learn about history. The Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum features outstanding ship models, maritime antiques, and maritime-inspired paintings. The museum focuses on 18th and 19th century Atlantic Ocean travel between England and America. Many guests of our Savannah GA Vacation Rentals have thoroughly enjoyed this museum.

Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum is aptly housed in Scarbrough House, built in 1819 for William Scarbrough and designed by Englishman William Jay. The house is notable for two reasons – it is one of the earliest homes built in the Greek Revival Style in the South, and its first owner was one of the principal owners of the Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It is a fitting home for Savannah’s historic Maritime Museum.

Although the Savannah earns kudos for being the first steamship to cross the Atlantic, it was not a commercial success. Only a few years after his home was completed, Scarbrough was forced to sell the house and furnishings to cover his debts. The house was abandoned for a time, was home to the West Broad Street School for nearly one hundred years, and, after falling into ruin, was restored by the Historic Savannah Foundations. Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum acquired the building in 1995, and finished its restoration.

Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum is only one of Savannah’s many historic attractions. In order to fully discover the city, consider lodging in one of our Savannah Vacation Rentals.
