Some say a visit to Savannah is incomplete without a visit to Bonaventure Cemetery. Located on a scenic bluff overlooking the Wilmington River, the cemetery is a 10 minutes drive from our rental properties in the historic district of Savannah. The cemetery gained national recognition when it was featured in John Berendt’s novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and in the movie by the same name, directed by Clint Eastwood in 1997.
There are a variety of businesses that lead tours of the cemetery. Spend a couple hours in Bonaventure – some of the tours take place a dusk or after dark. You’ll hear stories from present day all the way back to Bonaventure’s plantation beginnings in 1754. Some of the stories are funny, some macabre and others downright morbid! The tours usually cover everything from Savannah’s role in The DaVinci Code, to a hooch runner for Al Capone, to the story of a woman drowned and her innocent husband charged and put to death for the crime. This event is perfect for friends, groups or anyone looking to do something different in Savannah!
