Top Ten Things to Do in Savannah, Part II

June 22nd, 2013 by insideout

Last post, we started our Top Ten Savannah Attractions list. Here we continue with number five.

5. Bonaventure Cemetery

Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The cemetery looks out on the Wilmington River from a bluff east of Savannah, about four miles from our vacation houses in the Historic District. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. The cemetery is a world famous tourist destination, due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

6. Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park is a perfect place to stroll, jog, or take photographs, within the heart of the Savannah Historic District. This 30-acre park is bordered on the north by Gaston Street, on the south by Park Avenue and has a one-mile perimeter popular with runners. The park’s north end is home to a cast iron fountain that was erected in 1858. The Forsyth Park Fountain was designed to resemble the grand fountain in Paris at the Place de la Concorde. The park is also adorned by monuments to the Confederate Soldier, the Marine Corps Monument, the Spanish-American Monument and the Fragrant Garden for the Blind.

7. Olde Pink House

The food is incredibly good – try the crab cakes and scallops. Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with a rich history. Stop at the bar before your meal for a martini and make sure to ask your server or bartender for some history on this special Savannah residence. The property dates back to the 18th century and the dining room is split into smaller alcoves, making it feel more private and also cutting down on the noise level. The staff is very attentive and well-informed. Plus, the Olde Pink House is less than a mile from our rental houses.

We have three more attractions on our top ten list! Check the blog later this month to see what rounds out our top ten!
