These stained glass images represent the initial pastors of the church.

Built in 1861, this church was the first African-American Baptist Church on North America and was also a stop in the Underground Railroad. The church itself is beautiful and steeped in American history. You can take a tour of the interior, they usually take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. with well-informed and passionate guides. See the tiny secret room in the church where runaway slaves were hidden on their way north traveling on the underground railroad. The First African Baptist Church is an easy half mile walk from our vacation rentals.

9. Juliette Gordon Low’s Birthplace

This house was Savannah’s first Registered National Historic Landmark. You can take a guided tour of the home, which is decorated with authentic period furniture. A tour (adults are $8, children 5 and under are free) will share with you the lively stories of four generations of one American family, including Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts of the USA in 1912. The Gordon Low home is about a third of a mile walk from our Savannah rental homes.

10. Skidaway Island State Park

This state park borders Skidaway narrows, a part of Georgia’s intracoastal waterway. Hiking trails wind through maritime forest and past salt marshes, leading to a boardwalk and observation tower. Visitors can watch for deer, fiddler crabs, raccoon, egrets and other wildlife. Inside the park’s interpretive center, find information and tools for biriding, along with kid-oriented exhibits, like the 20-foot Giant Ground Sloth replica and reptile room. Open-air picnic shelters make great spots for lunch. The park is about 14 miles from our vacation rental houses in the Historic District.

This is just the beginning of what Savannah has to offer! We hope to see you soon.
