The 41st annual Savannah Holiday Tour of Homes – December 12, 2015 – is a unique opportunity to peek inside eight historic, private residences, decorated for the holidays, in some of the most picturesque parts of downtown Savannah.
Savannah is one of America’s most historic cities, with an enviable collection of beautiful homes and gardens that only become more delightful to the eye once they’ve been decorated for Christmas.
But wouldn’t be nice to be able to do more than just view them from the outside?
With the annual Savannah Holiday Tour of Homes, your wish comes true: Eight private, iconic, downtown Savannah residences open their doors to the public on this unique and popular, self-guided walking tour, now in its 41st year.
The Savannah Holiday Tour of Homes tradition began in 1974, started by Jim Williams, first president of the Savannah Downtown Neighborhood Association (you may recognize his name from somewhere else – Jim Williams was made even more famous by the success of John Berendt’s book, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”).
Owner of the Mercer House at the time, Jim thought people just might be interested in touring some of Savannah’s historic homes, especially after they’d been decorated for the holidays. In a bit of a gamble, he opened his own home for the very first Savannah Holiday Tour of Homes – or “Tour of Home,” as his was the only house on tour (he called that first event a “Christmas Tour”).
Jim Willaims’ success with that first tour proved his foresight and was the beginning of what has become a beloved and popular holiday tradition in Savannah – one that you can participate in (but only if you act fast – tickets are limited!).
The Savannah Holiday Tour Of Homes is a self-guided tour that starts at the Massie Heritage Center on Calhoun Square. You can buy tickets here on the day of the event (if they haven’t sold out) and collect your Savannah Holiday Tour of Homes Guidebook, which includes a map and list of the homes on the tour. If you bought tickets in advance, your guidebook will be being held for you under the name used to purchase the tickets.
