Celebrate Tybee Mardi Gras!

December 22nd, 2015 by Corey A. Edwards

Tybee Mardi Gras 2016The 9th annual Tybee Mardi Gras celebration on Tybee Island is scheduled for January 30th, 2016 – come out and enjoy this lively, colorful, traditional carnival holiday!

Mardi Gras is celebrated here in the US and all over the world. The festival dates back thousands of years to early, Roman fertility rituals, though has now evolved into a primarily Catholic event – but you don’t have to be Catholic to attend or enjoy the festivities! Mardi Gras was first celebrated in what was to become the United States in 1703 by French soldiers in Fort Louis de la Mobile – what we now call Mobile, Alabama.

Since those early days, Mardi Gras has gained more prominence in the US, centered primarily in New Orleans. Louisiana has even made the popular festival a legal holiday – the only state to do so. That doesn’t mean other US cities don’t celebrate Mardi Gras, however!

Tybee Island has been holdiing Mardi Gras celebrations for 9 years now, come 2016, and is perfect for the colorful and freewheeling festivities of this annual holiday. The island’s unique character and notoriously fun-loving residents make Mardi Gras a natural fit.

Tybee Mardi Gras 2016

Attendees to Tybee Mardi Gras will enjoy elaborate carnival festivities, with a Mardi Gras Street Party in the Tybrisa round-about, taking place on Saturday, January 30th, from 12pm to 6pm. Attractions are set to include a variety of live music performances, including Zydeco, Cajun cuisine, and – of course! – the 2016 Tybee Mardi Gras Parade!

A traditional, yet family-friendly parade, the Tybee Mardi Gras parade will include outlandish floats peopled by riders in elaborate masks and colorful clothes. Strings of beads, toys, and other “throws” will be tossed to the enthusiastic crowd – what fun!

The annual Tybee Mardi Gras parade will be followed by a costume contest and street dance. An event schedule, artist line-up, and other details have yet to be announced but soon will be – follow the developments at the Tybee Mardi Gras site: mardigrastybee.com
