Savannah's Ships of the Sea Maritime MuseumSavannah’s Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum hosts a collection of maritime models, paintings, and antiques that will thrill history buffs and boating fans alike.

Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum’s extensive collection is housed at the William Scarbrough House, another of Savannah’s historic attractions.

The William Scarbrough House is one of the first southern homes ever built in the Greek Revival Style. William Scarbrough was one of the principal owners of the SS Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. William Jay designed the house. He was also responsible for a number of other notable Savannah homes and buildings.

At the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, you’ll see scale-model reproductions of all kinds of famous ships. The aforementioned SS Savannah is here, along with many others, including the Titanic.

All the models were specially crafted for the museum and feature the same scale and attention to detail. The museum’s nine galleries include a collection of maritime paintings and maritime artifacts from all eras.

Part of the draw to the museum is the famous house, which was almost lost to history. Its grounds contain the largest private gardens within Savannah’s historic district. After years of neglect, the house was rescued and restored by Historic Savannah Foundation in the 1970s.

The Scarbrough Garden is an expanded example of a typical 19th century parlor garden. Careful attention to detail has kept the garden looking much as it would have in the early to mid 1800’s. The lush grounds, including a reflecting pool and various outbuildings, are entrancing.

Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016. Always hosting different events and exhibits, this year will be especially packed with fun things to do and see. Be sure to check their online event schedule!
