2016 Savannah Haitian Caribbean Heritage FestivalThe Anniversary Celebration of the Haitian Memorial Monument in Franklin Square offers a full weekend of activities. including the Savannah Haitian Caribbean Heritage Festival. October 7th and 8th, 2016.

The Haitian Memorial Monument in Franklin Square honors the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue (the volunteer soldiers of Saint-Domingue). This was one of the few black regiments to fight for the American side in the Revolutionary War. The soldiers were recruited from the French colony of Saint-Domingue, now called Haiti.

All volunteer soldiers, the ten companies of light infantry were part of the French force. The Chasseurs-Volontaires were the largest black regiment to serve during the American Revolution. Their force was the largest military unit serving during the Siege of Savannah.

After the War for Independence, some of the Chasseurs-Volontaires were instrumental in Haiti’s slave insurrections. Their success in 1804, liberated Haiti from French rule and created the first majority-black republic in the western world.

The anniversary celebration of the Haitian Memorial Monument attracts thousands. The event includes a parade, brunch, and a roundtable discussion. The nest day is the Savannah Haitian Caribbean Heritage Festival. The festival is a full day of cultural activities, including dance troupes, live music, workshops, and more. Scheduled entertainers include Tabou Combo, T-Micky, and Ayabonmbe!

Franklin Square is adjacent to the First African Baptist Church, founded by slaves in 1773. Attendees to the anniversary celebration in Franklin Square should consider paying it a visit as well.
