Step Back In Time At A Tybee Island Lighthouse Christmas!

November 25th, 2016 by Corey A. Edwards

Tybee Island Lighthouse Christmas 2016Take a step back in time to a Christmas past during the annual Tybee Island Lighthouse Christmas tour. Visit the lighthousekeeper’s world of the 1930’s and 40’s from 7 to 9pm on December 10th and 17th, 2016!

Tybee Island Lighthouse has been a part of the Georgia shoreline in one form or another since 1736. Lighthouse keepers lived alongside the lighthouse up until 1948. Many of those charged with keeping the lighthouse lived on the grounds with both assistants and often their immediate families. Consequently, many holidays have been celebrated at the Tybee Island Light, including, of course, Christmas.

Now you can experience what it must have been like to celebrate Christmas at the Tybee Island Lighthouse!

The Tybee Island Historical Society invites you to join them for a unique opportunity to travel back in time to the 1930s and ‘40s era of the last Tybee Island Lighthouse Keeper. Revel in the sights and customs of a quaint and distant Christmas. A simpler time, the lighthouse keeper’s crew and family often celebrated by themselves or with their closest, and sometimes only, neighbors: the military families of Fort Screven.

At the special Tybee Island Lighthouse Christmas, you’ll view the keeper’s house decked out for the holidays in vintage decorations. Docents will take you even further back as they relate what it was like to be a Tybee Island Lighthouse Keeper throughout the decades.

Climbing up the steep staircase of the tower, you’ll be treated to the spectacle of the Tybee Island’s collective Christmas lights spread out and twinkling below you. The evening will be further accented by caroling, delicious hot cider, and the warm, soft glow of candlelight. Wonderful!
