Georgia State Railroad MuseumSavannah’s Tricentennial Park has lots to see and do. The Savannah Children’s Museum is here, along with the Savannah History Museum. One of the biggest draws, however, is the Georgia State Railroad Museum, the largest and most complete Antebellum railroad repair facility around!

The Georgia State Railroad Museum, located in the old Central of Georgia Railway Savannah Shops and Terminal Facilities, is a stunning National Historic Landmark. Railroad enthusiasts and history buffs alike will thrill at the fully operational roundhouse turntable and a chance to ride on one of the engines!

The Central of Georgia Railroad was started in 1833. By 1843 it was the longest continuous railroad under one management in the world. The Central reached its peak in the early 1920’s, becoming Savannah’s largest employer.

By the 1940’s, diesel was replacing steam. Shop complexes around the country like the one in Savannah were slowly phased out. In 1963, The Southern Railway bought the Central of Georgia and closed down the Savannah shops, ending over 100 years of railroad activity at the site.

The property sat vacant and in disrepair until the Coastal Heritage Society took over management. After much work and with the support of the City of Savannah, the Georgia State Railroad Museum opened in 1989.

Originally known as the Roundhouse Railroad Museum, the Georgia State Railroad Museum has a fine collection of railcars and rolling stock on display. Visitors will learn fascinating details about the history of the Central of Georgia Railroad from a history interpreter. You can even take the opportunity to operate a vintage handcar!

The museum also operates two locomotive engines reflecting both eras – steam and diesel – that visitors can ride. The No. 30 is a 1913 steam locomotive while the No. 119, a diesel locomotive built in 1947. The schedule for rides on these historical engines rotates and can be found on the museum website, chsgeorgia.org.
