The 7th (or second 6th, as they’re calling it) annual Coastal Empire Surfers For Autism Beach Festival is a fun, educational, and very popular event for families with special needs children. It is a fun-filled way to introduce young people with autism and similar issues to the art of surfing.
The first Surfers for Autism Beach Festival was held in Florida in 2008. The event was so popular with students, families, and instructors that they decided to make it an annual event. Today, SFA hosts full-scale beach festivals on 12 dates up and down the coasts of Florida, Australia, and right here in Georgia at Tybee Island!
Tybee Island has been hosting Coastal Empire Surfers for Autism Beach Festivals on the Saturday after Labor Day since 2005. Organizers have come to expect expect more than 2,000 attendees over the course of the day.
Surfers For Autism (SFA) provide a safe and fun, judgement-free environment for highly skilled surf instructors and their students. Up to 350 volunteers will be on hand to assist with activities ranging from surfing, stand up paddle boarding (SUP), and kayaking. There will also be live music, face painting, fire engine tours, and more. A catered lunch will also be provided.
