Savannah, Georgia celebrates this beloved German festival every year. This 29th annual Oktoberfest in Savannah features traditional German food, drink and music throughout the River District. There will be a merry crowd in historic downtown Savannah enjoying beers of every kind, plus wine, brats, sauerkraut, weiners and ridiculously large pretzels. Dance your best “1-2-3-hop” to the sounds of a live polka band while holding a full beer stein in one hand and a brat-stuffed brotchen roll in the other. Try not to spill! Besides German folk music by Rhinelanders Oompah Band, there will also be various bands and non-German foods such as Italian ice and kettle corn.
Besides great food, drink and music, there will be other activities to complete the festivities. The Savannah Oktoberfest Juried Arts & Crafts Show will delight your eyes with fine works by local and regional artists and artisans. Vendor tents will be set up and selling wares of every kind. Oktoberfest falls on the first weekend of the month which means First Friday Fireworks sponsored by the Savannah Riverfront will light up the sky starting at about 9:20 pm.
Saturday’s events will also give you plenty of reasons to cheer. Root for your favorite contestants at the Roger Wood Foods and Ambos Seafood Sausage Eating Contest. You can also cheer on the dachsunds at the signature event of the festival, the Weiner Dog Races. Look at those little legs go! It’s fun and cuteness for all starting at 10 am. Come to Morrell Park at the east end of River Street to watch the action. The Savannah Oktoberfest Weiner Dog Races are true crowd pleaser you won’t want to miss.
